One-Way Southbound Trial

This trial investigated how we might create safe and accessible walking routes between Strathallan Bridge and Te Āna/ Heritage Place to improve connections to the coastal trails or to other recreational areas.

 

What happened and why?

On February 17th 2023, One-way southbound vehicle movement for one day sought to trial safe and accessible walking access between Strathallan Bridge and Te Ana/ Heritage Place to test whether this could bring more people into the south end of town from the coastal trails and recreation areas.

Key elements:

  • Temporary, lo-fi elements like cones & barriers.

  • A wider, safer area for pedestrians to walk.

  • Relocated bus stops.

  • One southbound lane for buses and vehicles.

  • Cruise ship visitation.

  • Supportive traffic management & signage to facilitate vehicle circulation & access to operating businesses.
