Stafford Street
Traffic calming trial
This trial investigated how accessibility for pedestrians might be improved in the south end of town by introducing traffic calming measures, and making crossings more convenient and safe.
What happened and why?
From February 17th to March 10th 2023, this trial sought to make existing public spaces more functional and accessible. This Stafford Street trial reallocated some road space to pedestrians, make crossing distances shorter and calm vehicle speeds using low cost, and removable elements such as hit sticks and speed cushions.
Key elements:
Raised speed cushions & 30km/h speed limit.
Temporary relocation of 2 carparks .
Left turn lane temp. removed but left turn still possible.
No right hand turn into George Street for the 3-weeks.
This trial overlapped with the Station Street (17 Feb) & George Street (17 Feb -10 Mar) trials which sought to attract more people into the heart of Timaru with improved access from the coastline, along with larger city spaces that more people can enjoy.
