Non-slip tile treatment

What happened?

Non-Slip Tiles Improve Safety and Mobility at the Library and on Stafford Street

To address slip hazards and improve accessibility in inner Timaru, the council has applied Ranger Specialist Coatings non-slip product to our famously slippery tiles in a number of the most critical locations.

So far this grip enhancing product has been applied outside the library, at the corner around The Oxford, and along Stafford Street from George Street to Sefton St East/SH78, The Bay Hill and the Piazza.

See the highlighted areas in the map below of where the non-slip treatment was applied.

Why did it happen?

The council has received feedback about the slippery tiles for many years, with concerns ranging from safety through to economic impact where residents and visitors might avoid businesses in slip-prone areas. (See Timaru's Miles of Tiles).

It is anticipated that the new surfaces will increase pedestrians’ safety and confidence when moving through the city centre, at the same time mitigating the impact of the former hazard for businesses and their customers.
