One-way Westbound Trial
This trial investigated how Timaru could attract more people to live, work and play in the southern part of the Timaru City Centre through greater public amenity, mobility and access.
What happened and why?
From February 17th to March 10th 2023, One-way westbound vehicle movement was trialed to create more dedicated public space for activities and events without having to close the road, and exploring whether this creates more vibrancy through more people spending more time there.
Key elements:
Safe & interactive public open space, with activities relating to the Port and seaside.
Repurposed temporary furniture & planting
More pedestrian signals at the intersection.
Reconfigured and easy-access parking that doesn’t disrupt ‘people spaces’ or safe pedestrian movement.
Supportive traffic management & signage to facilitate vehicle circulation & access to operating businesses.
