Beautification Enhancements: Enhancing the Vibrancy of Inner Timaru: Revitalizing Tree Pits and Garden Beds

The heart of any city lies in its vibrant and well-maintained public spaces. With an aim to nurture a greener and more welcoming environment, CityTown unveiled an exciting initiative to enhance the vibrancy of our beloved inner Timaru.

Located right along the length of Stafford Street from down low in tree pits and planter boxes and up high in hanging baskets, native and exotic plantings have proven to be a valuable asset in enlivening public spaces, enriching biodiversity, and promoting sustainability.

From June 2024, phase 2 of the beautification of Stafford Street commencing firstly with the relocation of the garden bed barriers to protect the soil and plantings from future pedestrian and vehicular impacts, and from July, the construction of a new raised planter bed on the corner of George and Stafford Streets. From July/August and when the weather warms up, new plantings will be installed along Stafford Street.

Why is it happening?

Council receives regular feedback from businesses and pedestrians around the condition of our various plantings, and the impact this has on inner city vibrancy. While seasonal growth, weeds and poor parking behaviour present significant maintenance challenges for these living artworks, particularly for our street level beds, we share our community’s vision of a thriving, healthy, sustainable city centre rich in green spaces and biodiversity.

As a result, this project aligns perfectly with the council's wider sustainability vision and enhancing inner city vibrancy.

By utilising robust and vibrant plant species, the project encourages water conservation, reduces the reliance on chemical fertilisers, and decreased maintenance requirements, thus creating a sustainable and low-maintenance solution that benefits both the community and the environment.
